The resignation of Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba is set to trigger a major power reshuffle within Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party, with allies of the late Shinzo Abe and other influential figures like Taro Aso poised to play kingmaker in the succession race.
Ishiba, who never belonged to the party’s core conservative factions, was forced out after failing to deliver at the polls. The loss of LDP’s majorities in both the lower and upper houses provided the perfect pretext for his rivals to move against him.
His departure was a calculated move to pre-empt a formal ouster attempt. By resigning, he avoids a direct confrontation but clears the way for a leadership contest where the party’s traditional power brokers will wield significant influence over the outcome.
The race to succeed him will test the strength of these factions. Whether they back a hard-line conservative like Sanae Takaichi or a different candidate will depend on complex internal calculations, but their goal will be to install a leader who aligns more closely with their political vision.
